Abstract
Torsion of the great omentum is rare but occurs as a definite clinical and surgical entity of which preoperative diagnosis is rarely made, the usual clinical impression being, in order of frequency, acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, ruptured peptic ulcer and acute pancreatitis.
We experienced 3 cases of omental torsion of which 2 were with the inguinal hernia and the other one associated with acute appendicitis following pregnancy, which were successfully treated by adequate surgical intervention.
Reviewing the literatures and from our experiences in this regard, it is agreeable that the surgeon must remain aware of the disease and search for it if, at laparotomy, other adequate cause is not found to explain the particular symptoms complained by the patients; especially if, in the peritoneal cavity, free sero sanguinous fluid is found even in the exploration through a small McBurney type of incision.
